Coming to the Streets of Galveston
Mardi Gras 2025
How we became the Whodah Krewe
Once upon a time, in the smoky taverns of Galveston, the salty air carried whispers of adventure. Sadie Waters, a spirited pirate with a penchant for dancing, yearned for more than the typical revelry of Mardi Gras. Inspired, she gathered a Krewe of kindred souls, affectionately referred to as the Founding Souls, and set off to hoist their colors aboard their ship, the Whodah. With hearts of black, gold, and merlot colors, the Krewe embodied the spirit of the sea. Pirates and mixologists, they concocted life-saving elixirs, blending water, rum, and lime during happy hour, a ritual embracing a life on the isle. United by True Friendship, Freedom, and Equality, the WhoDah Krewe emerged as a force of camaraderie. Donning gold earrings etched with their home port of Galveston, TX, they sealed their bond in the sacred pirate matelotage, vowing to share the spoils through thick and thin. "Matey" became a living pledge of loyalty. The pelican, symbolizing sacrifice, replaced the parrot as their mascot; a nod to loyalty, as a mother pelican's self-sacrifice symbolized the Krewe's commitment to one another. Under sail, disagreements were silenced, for pirates danced in unity. Only ashore, on sun-kissed beaches, could the Krewe settle disputes, guided by the values etched in their pirate pledge. And so, the WhoDah Krewe set sail through Mardi Gras, not just as pirates but as champions of love, honesty, and loyalty, with a tale as colorful as the flags adorning their ship.
“WHODAH”
became their battle cry!
